Carmen "La Chiqui" Linares
Founder, Director & Instructor

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and introduced to the world of dance as an infant by her aunt, Luisa Navas. Under her aunt’s early guidance, Chiqui began training in ballet and classical Spanish dance.

Recognizing Chiqui’s talent and potential, her aunt ensured she received instruction from acclaimed visiting artists, keeping her in rigorous, daily training. Her dedication earned her a government scholarship to study in Spain, where she trained in ballet under the Maestro Héctor Zaraspe, “La Guica.”

Chiqui’s exceptional artistry has been recognized with multiple accolades, including Puerto Rico’s prestigious “Agüeybaná” award—considered the island’s equivalent of an Oscar for four consecutive years, as well as the distinguished “Castañuelas de Oro.” She went on to perform for ten years as the dance partner of Antonio Santaella of Granada, Spain.

Today, it is a true privilege to have Chiqui serve as the Artistic Director of Raíces de Arte Español. Her unwavering dedication to the art of flamenco, her passion for nurturing talent and her ability to build confidence in her students have inspired countless dancers in San Antonio, across the U.S. and internationally.
